ASTM D1596 Test for Dynamic Shock Cushioning Properties of Packaging Material

This standard specifies a procedure for obtaining the dynamic shock cushioning properties of packaging materials by means of acceleration-time data obtained from dropping a falling guide roller assembly onto a stationary sample.

This test method does not address any influence or contribution of outer packaging assemblies.

The data obtained can be used to develop a dynamic cushion curve for a single point or for the specific material being tested. Curves are used to predict the performance of materials under conditions of use or to make comparisons between different materials under certain input conditions.
Caution should be exercised when trying to compare data from different methods or using such data to estimate in-package performance. Depending on the specific materials involved, the correlation of such data (between different procedures or to predict intra-package performance) can be highly variable.

An alternative and relevant method for possible evaluation is Test Method D 4168.
