ASTM D5034 Standard Test Method for Tensile Strength and Elongation of Textile Fabrics

The ASTM D5034 standard covers grip and modified grip test procedures for determining the breaking strength and elongation of most textile fabrics. Provisions are made for wet tests.

While the grip test procedure can be applied to woven, nonwoven and felt fabrics, the modified grip test procedure is mainly used for woven fabrics.

This test method is not recommended for glass fabrics or knitted fabrics and other textile fabrics with high stretch (more than 11%). To determine the breaking force and elongation of textile fabrics using the crimped tape test procedure and the shear tape test procedure, refer to Test Method D5035.

This test method provides values ​​in both inch-pound units and SI units. Inch-pound units are the technically correct name for the conventional units used in the United States. SI units are the technically correct name for the system of metric units known as the International System of Units.

Values ​​specified in acceptable metric units or other units will also be considered standard. The values ​​specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other, without combining them in any way.
