ASTM D5045 Test Methods for Plane-Stress Fracture Toughness and Tensile Energy Release Rate of Plastic Materials

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D5045 standard. The ASTM D5045 standard is designed to characterize the toughness of plastics in terms of the critical stress-intensity factor, KIc, and the energy per unit area of the crack surface, or the critical strain energy release rate at fracture initiation, GIc.

ASTM D5045 Test Methods for Plane-Stress Fracture Toughness and Tensile Energy Release Rate of Plastic Materials

These test methods cover two test geometries, single edge notched bending (SENB) and compact tension (CT). The scheme used assumes the linear elastic behavior of the cracked specimen, so certain restrictions are imposed on the linearity of the load-displacement diagram.

A planar strain is required at the crack tip. The sample thickness should be sufficient to provide this stress condition. The crack must be sharp enough to ensure that the minimum toughness value is achieved.

The KIc (GIc) property specified by ASTM D5045 characterizes the resistance of a material to fracture in a neutral environment in the presence of a sharp crack under severe tensile constraint such that the stress state near the crack front approaches planar strain and the crack tip is in the plastic (or nonlinear viscoelastic) region. , is small compared to the crack size and sample sizes in the restriction direction. A KIc value is believed to represent a lower limiting value of fracture toughness.

The importance of these test methods and many test conditions are the same as those of Test Method E399 and therefore appear here in most cases with many similarities to the metal standard. However, certain conditions and specifications that are not covered in Test Method E399, but that are important to plastics, are included.

This protocol also covers the determination of GIc, which is particularly important for plastics. These test methods give an overview of the requirements for KIc and GIc testing. Two appendices are provided giving specific requirements for testing SENB and CT geometries.

The test data obtained with these test methods are relevant and suitable for use in engineering design. This standard and ISO 13586 deal with the same topic, but differ in technical content.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization, EUROLAB, provides test methods services for the plane-stress fracture toughness and tensile energy release rate of plastic materials, within the framework of national and international standards, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies. Provides testing services within the scope of ASTM D5045 standard.
