ASTM D5116 Standard Guide for Small-Scale Environmental Chamber Detections of Organic Emissions from Indoor Materials

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D5116 standard. This standard guide provides guidelines for the measurement of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from indoor materials and products using small-scale environmental test chambers.

ASTM D5116 Standard Guide for Small-Scale Environmental Chamber Detections of Organic Emissions from Indoor Materials

This standard guide deals with chambers completely surrounding a sample of material to be tested and does not address other emission chamber designs such as emission cells.

As an ASTM standard, this guide describes options but does not recommend specific action plans. This guide is not a standard test method and should not be construed as such.

The use of small environmental test chambers to characterize VOC emissions from indoor materials and products is still evolving. Changes and variations are made in equipment, test procedures, and data analysis as work in the field progresses.

More detailed ASTM standards have been developed for emission testing for several indoor materials. Where more detailed ASTM standard practices or methods are available, they supersede and should be used in place of this guide. There will be differences in approach until the parties involved can agree on standardized testing protocols.

Small rooms have obvious limitations. Normally, only samples of larger materials (eg carpet) are tested. Small chambers are not applicable for testing complete assemblies (eg furniture). Small chambers are also not suitable for testing combustion devices (eg kerosene heaters) or activities (eg use of aerosol spray products).

For some products, small room testing can only provide a portion of the relevant emission profile. For example, brushing, spraying, rolling etc. of high solvent materials (e.g. paints and varnishes). The emission rate from application through the drying process is generally higher than during the drying process.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
