ASTM D5276 Test

Standard Test Method for Free Fall Drop Test of ASTM D5276 Load Containers

ASTM D5276 is the procedure for testing loaded boxes, cylindrical containers and bags or sacks by the free fall method. Used for containers less than 110 lbs. This test will also meet some ISO standards.

ASTM D5276 Test

This test is used to evaluate the ability of a container to withstand sudden shocks caused by a free fall. It also acts as a tool to assess the container's ability to protect its content during free fall. This test can be used to compare packaging containers. Different designs can be tested and compared for their protective properties. It is also useful to perform this test to observe the failure of a container and the damage to its contents.

ASTM D5276 best suited for hand-held containers at one point throughout the delivery cycle. If a container is too large or too heavy to be carried by hand, there may be a different test that is more suitable for optimum test results.

The Basic Requirements indicate that the lowering apparatus should:

  • Allow the container to be fixed to the device so that the position is correctly oriented within 2 degrees upon impact
  • Allow the correct control of the fall from the specified height
  • Use lifting devices that will not damage the test sample
  • Provide a separation mechanism that does not apply vertical, rotation, or lateral force to the test cup
  • Provide a spring or other mechanism (only if leaves are used) that will not interfere with free fall

Impact Surface Requirements:

  • Horizontal and flat impact surface
  • It cannot be transported and the sample is large enough to completely fall onto its surface
  • Too hard to deform under test conditions
  • Concrete, stone or steel
  • The impact surface must be at least 50 times the weight of the heaviest container to be tested
  • Depth and width should not be less than half the length

There are different requirements when using the risk of explosion or when testing certain fiber drums and very large containers.

The test sample must be conditioned before starting the ASTM D5276 test. The test sample and the number of samples should allow adequate performance of the field. ASTM recommends testing at least three samples in the absence of a sampling plan. Whether it is testing the container's ability to withstand rough handling or the ability to safely carry the contents of the container, it is recommended that the container be packaged with the actual ingredients it will carry.

It is also acceptable to pack the container with simulated contents when testing for handling. Regardless of its content, the container must be closed or sealed, as for shipping. This should be done well before testing, so that the container reaches normal shipping conditions before testing.

To perform ASTM D5276 free fall test, containers must be marked according to their face or location. The test sample will then be placed on the drop apparatus according to the type of drop to be tested (straight edge, edge drop, etc.). For the purposes of this test, measure from the bottom surface, the edge or the corner to the impact surface to accurately measure the height of the drop. The test lab records the measurements, lowers the data and completes a report by following the instructions specified in the ASTM D5276 standard.
