The test methods considered are the compression of a double-notch test specimen to determine the interlayer shear strength, and the Iosipescu test method for determining the shear strength in any of the material planes of laminated composites.

This test method is used to test continuous fiber reinforced advanced ceramic or glass matrix composites with unidirectional (1-D) or bidirectional (2-D) fiber architecture. This test method does not consider composites with (3-D) fiber architecture or discontinuous fiber-reinforced, bristle-reinforced, or particle-reinforced ceramics.
