ASTM C1359 Standard Test Method for Continuous Fiber Reinforced Advanced Ceramics with Solid Rectangular Section Test Specimens at High Temperatures

This test method covers the determination of tensile strength, including stress-strain behavior, under monotonic uniaxial loading of advanced continuous fiber reinforced ceramics at elevated temperatures.

This test method considers, but is not limited to, a variety of suggested test specimen geometries, as listed in the appendices. In addition, test specimen production methods, test modes (force, displacement or strain control), test rates (force ratio, strain ratio, displacement ratio or strain ratio), allowable bending, temperature control, temperature gradients, and data acquisition and reporting procedures.

Tensile strength as used in this test method refers to the tensile strength obtained under monotonic uniaxial loading.

This test method is primarily applicable to advanced ceramic matrix composites with continuous fiber reinforcement: unidirectional (1D), bidirectional (2D), and tridirectional (3D) or other multidirectional reinforcements. In addition, this test method can also be used with 1D, 2D, 3D and other versatile continuous fiber reinforced glass (amorphous) matrix composites.

This test method does not directly address discontinuous fiber-reinforced, hair-reinforced, or particle-reinforced ceramics, although the test methods detailed here are equally applicable to these composites.
