ASTM C679 Standard Test Method for Adhesion Duration of Elastomeric Sealants

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of ASTM C679 testing. This test method describes a procedure for determining the adhesion time characteristic of single and multi-component elastomeric sealants commonly used for sealing, caulking and glazing in buildings and related construction.

This test method can be applied to self-leveling and non-sagging filling materials. Seals that require gentle heating to facilitate removal from the cartridge or gun are also accounted for by this test method.

The test consists of gently touching one surface of the cured insulation material with a polyethylene film at regular intervals until the insulation material no longer adheres to the film and the film appears clean when peeled off the surface.

More specifically, a strip of polyethylene film is placed on the surface of the hardening sealant and a 30 g weight is placed on the film. The weight is left in place for 30 seconds, then the polyethylene strip is removed and inspected for sealant adhesion to the film. The period from the moment the sealant is first applied and placed on the template until the sealant is no longer absorbed by the film is called adhesion-free time.

Tack time is a measure of surface cure time and can often be related to a variety of useful parameters, such as the time interval before the sealant resists damage from touch or light surface contact, resists handling, and so on.

Spray-free time is sometimes used as an on-the-job quality assurance test. A consistent and repeatable quality product will generally be within the maximum and minimum tack time.

This no-stick time test can be used in any temperature and humidity. If a sealant is used in a climate significantly different from the standard conditions specified in this test method, it is important that these conditions be used to test the sealant.
