This test method involves indirectly measuring the unevenness of textile strips from yarn produced from tow, ball, strip, roving and staple fibers and filament yarns through continuous runs using capacitance testing equipment.
The test method provides the "short term irregularity" value, which is a single value denoting the complex yarn property, which is irregularity. Low twist filament yarns should only be tested if additional twist is added during testing.
In many cases, these low-twist yarns tend to flatten into a strip as they pass through the condenser of the tool, and the recorded evenness value rises above the actual value. Yarns made from fiber blends should only be tested if the blending is uniform throughout the yarn.
Non-uniform blending can result in a higher than true reading of irregularity if the component fibers differ in dielectric constant. The magnitude of the increase in irregularity readings due to non-uniform collation cannot be expressed in general terms.
Values specified in acceptable metric units or other units will also be considered standard. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore each system should be used independently of the other, without combining values in any way.
