ASTM D5331 Test

ASTM D5331 Standard Test Method for Evaluation of Mechanical Handling of Unit Loads Fixed with Stretch Films

The scope of ASTM D5331 is to evaluate and compare unit films by evaluating their ability to withstand various mechanical processes. The test method applies to common transport methods, including forklift, push / pull, clamp truck, crane and shovel-lift type transport systems.

ASTM D5331 Test

Test levels can be varied to better reflect the known density levels in the field. ASTM D5331 focuses on sample preparation and evaluation while evaluating the performance of the stretch film for load joining.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms are defined:

  • Large shipping box or crate - a shipping container of any size and weight that requires mechanical handling (any material). This unit can weigh between 100 lbs and tons. It can be fixed or moved with a base or pallet. A frame can be provided to stabilize the stiffness in the container.
  • Core lift attachment - A lifting device attachment for upper transport products. Products can include interlocking flange cartons (IFC), folded cover or folded cover style cartons.
  • Combined load - two or more packages wrapped or taped as a transport unit. When they are in units, they normally weigh more than 100 lbs. packages can be converted into units using shrink wrap, taping, strapping, taping or gluing. The combined load includes a pallet or interlayer, but does not have to be mandatory.

ASTM D5331 it is often used to compare the performance of unit films. However, it can also be used to compare a kind of dressing material used in different dressing cycles. It is important to note that there is no direct relationship between the test result and field performance. Instead, the test simulates mechanical machining at all dispensing stages. The user can customize the test to simulate a specific delivery environment. To do this, the user can use discretion to determine the test levels and the number of test cycles.

The two apparatus used in this test are the load winding apparatus and the mechanical conveying apparatus. The load wrapping apparatus is a machine that wraps the test load. This method should be as close as possible to the actual wrapping method used in production before shipment. Mechanical use will be determined by the test method. To prepare test loads, start by arranging the packages in a way similar to real production. It can be loaded in layers or stacked on a pallet or slip paper.

The load should then be wrapped with unit film using a predetermined face stretching and winding cycle. Again, this is predetermined by the user at his discretion. The unit load should then be left untouched for at least 16 hours before testing. This time allows the stretched wrapping material to reach the balance of stress holding forces. The test will then be carried out according to the selected test procedure. Test procedures include crawler load, paddle lift, clamp carry and push / pull carry.

At the end of the test, the laboratory will record the data and compile a test report containing all the information specified in the ASTM D5331 standard.
