ASTM D5402 Test Standard for Evaluating Solvent Resistance of Organic Coatings Using Solvent Rubs

This standard describes a solvent scrubbing technique for evaluating the solvent resistance of an organic coating that changes chemically during the curing process. This technique can be used in the laboratory, in the field or in the workshop. This standard differs from ASTM D 4752 in that it does not specify the test solvent, the number of double rubs required, or the expected test result. It is the responsibility of the coating manufacturer to determine the appropriate test solvent, the number of double rubs for the specific organic coating, the temperature at which the test will be performed, and the specific test results required to establish the solvent resistance of the coating film.

ASTM D5402 Test Method

Coatings that chemically alter during the curing process, such as epoxies, vinyl esters, polyesters, alkyds and urethanes, become more resistant to solvents as they cure. These coatings must reach certain levels of solvent resistance before they can be overcoated and put into service; Required levels of solvent resistance vary with the type of coating and the intended service. Scrubbing with a cloth dipped in the appropriate solvent is one way of determining that a certain level of solvent resistance by itself does not indicate full cure and that some coatings become solvent resistant before they are sufficiently cured for service.

The time it takes to reach a certain level of solvent resistance is affected by temperature, film thickness, air movement, thinning (the type and amount of solvent used to reduce the coating), and relative humidity (especially water-reactive coatings).
