ASTM D5733 Standard Test Method for Tear Strength of Nonwovens with Trapezoid Procedure

This test method applies to most nonwovens, including treated or untreated, heavily sized, coated or resin-treated. This test method may not be useful for high loft nonwovens.

The trapezoidal tear strength measured in this test method is the maximum tearing force required to sustain or propagate a previously initiated tear in the specimen. The value reported is not directly related to the force required to initiate or initiate the tear.
