Standard Test Method for Evaporative Loss of Lubricating Oils by ASTM D5800 Noack Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D5800 standard. This test method covers four procedures for determining the evaporation loss of lubricating oils (especially motor oils).

Measured evaporation is reported as percent total loss. The test method relates to a range of operating conditions, but can be easily adapted to other conditions as needed.

Procedure B and Procedure D in the main part of the test method provide equivalent results. Procedures A and C were found to deviate slightly compared to Procedures B and D. Procedures B and D give slightly higher results than Procedures A and C with formulated engine oils, while Procedures B and D give lower results than Procedure A. Therefore, a correction factor is used to convert between two sets of Procedures based on fluid type.
