ASTM D5895 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Drying or Curing During Film Formation of Organic Coatings Using Mechanical Recorders

This standard defines the determination of the dry film formation rate and various stages of organic coatings using straight line and circular mechanical drying time recorders. The use of mechanical loggers is valuable in comparing the drying behavior of coatings of the same generic type, allowing one coating to form a gel or resist tearing at a faster rate than the other.

ASTM D5895 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Drying or Curing During Film Formation of Organic Coatings Using Mechanical Recorders

Drying time measured using mechanical recorders may differ from those found by conventional methods such as standard D1640 or ISO 9117-3 (formerly ISO 1517).

The dry-hard state is achieved using mechanical recorders when the drying and curing or both reactions have progressed sufficiently so that the film does not displace and pinch the panels on the film with relatively strong force between the thumb and forefinger, leaving no visible marks. In this standard, the dry-hard time is reached when the pen comes out of the film and rides on the surface, leaving only a trace without disturbing the body of the film.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
