ASTM D610 Test

The ASTM D610 test covers the assessment of the degree of corrosion on painted steel surfaces. It allows us to evaluate the degree of corrosion of a painted steel surface using the visual aid provided by this method.

ASTM D610 Test

In fact, this application corresponds to a standard way of assessing the amount and distribution of visible surface corrosion on a coated surface. More specifically, ASTM D610 was established as a means to characterize the corrosion level observed in old samples as homogeneous. Therefore, it should be used with methods such as ASTM D610, ASTM B117, ASTM D714, and ASTM G85. EUROLAB offers ASTM D610 testing as part of its corrosion testing services.

The purpose of ASTM D610 is to provide a standard tool for assessing the degree of corrosion of painted surfaces with the aid of visual examples. Indeed, photographs published by this method are classified on a scale of 0 to 10 based on the percentage of rusted surface visible and the distribution of rust. In fact, a lower grade corresponds to a large worn surface, while a high grade corresponds to a small corroded surface. Also, by assessing the amount of rust under or inside a paint film, it is possible to determine if the coating system needs to be replaced or repaired, as this is a great indicator of the remaining life of the latter.

The main factors involved in conducting this test protocol are: the classification of rust distribution and the degree of rusting. Corrosion rated by ASTM D610 is twofold: the degree of rust and the distribution of rust.

EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, helps you get precise and fast results within the scope of ASTM D610 test.
