ASTM D6226 Standard Test Method for Open Cell Content of Rigid Cellular Plastics

This standard covers cellular plastics consisting of polymer membranes or walls separating small spaces or cells. These cells can be interconnected (open cell), disconnected (closed cell), or any combination of these types.

This test method determines numerical values ​​for open cells. It is a porosity assay that measures the accessible cellular volume of a material. The remaining volume is the volume occupied by closed cells and their cell walls.

As any suitably sized sample is typically obtained by some shearing, some of the closed cells will be opened by sample preparation and included as open cells.

This test method provides good accuracy predominantly on highly open-cell materials. Not taking into account closed cells opened during sample preparation, accuracy decreases as closed cell content increases and cell size increases.
