ASTM D6272 Four-Point Flexural Test for Flexural Properties of Non-Reinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D6272 testing. This test method covers the determination of the flexural properties of unreinforced and reinforced plastics, including high modulus composites and electrical insulating materials in the form of rectangular bars directly molded or cut from sheets, sheets or molded shapes.

These test methods are generally applicable to rigid and semi-rigid materials. However, the bending strength cannot be determined for materials that do not break or break in the outer fibers. This test method uses a four-point loading system applied to a simply supported beam.

This test method defines two procedures (Procedure A and Procedure B), the choice of which depends on the behavior of the sample to be tested as described below:

  • Procedure A is primarily designed for materials that break at relatively small deflections. To be used for the measurement of flexural properties, in particular flexural modulus, unless otherwise specified in the material specification.
  • Procedure B is specifically designed for materials that are subject to large deflections during testing. Suitable for bending strength measurement.

Comparative tests are permitted according to both procedures, provided that the procedure is found to be satisfactory for the material being tested.

Values stated in SI units will be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

This test method is similar to ISO 14125, Method B. However, ISO 14125, Method B specifies a load range of only 1/3 of the support range, while D6272 also allows for a load range of 1/2 the support range. For this reason, and other differences in technical content, be very careful when trying to compare results between two test methods.
