ASTM C29 Standard Test Method for Aggregate Density (Unit Weight) and Voids

This testing method is often used to determine bulk density values ​​necessary for many methods of selecting proportions for concrete mixtures.

Bulk density can also be used to determine mass/volume relationships for conversions in purchasing agreements. However, the relationship between the degree of compaction of aggregates in a handling unit or pile and that obtained in this test method is unknown. Additionally, aggregates in handling units and piles often contain absorbed moisture and surface moisture (the latter affecting bulking), while this test method determines bulk density on a dry basis.

A procedure for calculating the percentage of voids between aggregate particles based on the bulk density determined by this test method is included.
