EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D4530 standard. This test method covers the determination of the amount of carbon residue formed after the evaporation and pyrolysis of petroleum materials under certain conditions and is intended to provide some indication of the relative coking tendency of such materials.
This test method is applicable to petroleum products that partially decompose when distilled at atmospheric pressure and has been tested for carbon residue values of 0,10% to 30% (m/m). Samples expected to be below 0.10% (m/m) by weight residue should be distilled to remove 90% (V/V) of the bottle load. The remaining 10% of the base is then tested for carbon residue with this test method.
Ash-forming components or non-volatile additives present in the sample, as defined by test method D482, will be added to the carbon residue value and included as part of the total reported carbon residue value.
Also, in diesel fuel, the presence of alkyl nitrates such as amyl nitrate, hexyl nitrate or octyl nitrate results in a higher carbon residue value than that observed in untreated fuel, which can lead to erroneous conclusions about the fuel's tendency to coke. The presence of alkyl nitrate in the fuel can be detected by test method D4046.
