ASTM D7686 Standard Test Method for Field Condition Monitoring of Soot in In-Service Oils Using a Fixed Filter Infrared (IR) Instrument

It can be applied to oils with a soot level up to 12% by mass.

This test method uses filter-based infrared technology to monitor soot formation in in-service petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants as a result of normal machine operation. Soot levels in engine oils rise as soot particles contaminate the oil as a result of exhaust gas recirculation.

This test method is designed as a fast, simple, field-available spectroscopic check for soot on in-service hydrocarbon-based lubricants to help diagnose machine operating condition based on measuring the soot level in the oil.
