ASTM F2778 Test for Measurement of Percent Crystallinity of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Polymers

This test method describes the collection of the absorption spectra of the polyetheretherketone (PEEK) polymer in filled and unfilled grades provided by a vendor, and then calculating the percentage of crystallinity.

The material is evaluated by infrared spectroscopy. The intensity (height) of the absorbance peaks is related to the amount of crystalline regions present in the material.

This test method can be used for PEEK bonded forms, such as injection molded parts, as long as the specimens are optically flat and smooth.

The applicability of the infrared method to industrial and medical grade PEEK materials has been proven by scientific studies. The percent crystallinity is related to the R-FTIR measurement with calibration via wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) crystallinity measurements.
