Standard Test Method for Horizontal Burn Rate and / or Elongation and Burn Time of Plastics

This test method has been developed for polymeric materials used for devices and parts in devices. The results are designed as a preliminary indicator of their flammability admissibility for a particular application. The final acceptance of the material depends on its use in equipment that complies with the standard applicable to such equipment.

Burn rate and other combustion events are affected by factors such as density, pigments, anisotropy of the material and thickness of the sample. The test data should be compared only for samples of similar thickness, whether they compare with the same or different materials. Combustion rate and other combustion events will vary with thickness.

Combustion tests require arbitrary fixation of some variables, such as sample variables, energy source and application time, and endpoints. There will be materials that are unusually sensitive to one or more of the conditions selected for this method and can lead to highly variable results. In such cases, additional combustion characterization by other methods is highly desirable.

In this procedure, samples are subjected to specific laboratory test conditions. If different test conditions are changed or end-use conditions are changed, it will not always be possible to estimate changes in the measured fire test response properties from this test or test. Therefore, the results are valid only for the fire test exposure conditions described in this procedure.
