This test method can also be used, if desired, to estimate the amount of oil volatilized at any temperature between 126 °C and 371 °C.
This test method is limited to specimens with an initial boiling point (IBP) or initial calibration point greater than 126 °C (259 °F) and specimens containing lubricating base oils with endpoints less than 615 °C (1139 °F). ) or the final n-paraffins in the calibration mix. By using some instruments and columns it is possible to extend the useful range of the test method.
This test method uses the principles of simulated distillation methodology.
This test method is applicable to both lubricant oil base stocks and finished lubricants containing additive packages. These additive packages generally contain high molecular weight, non-volatile components that do not elute from the chromatographic column under test conditions. The calculation procedure used in this test method assumes that the entire sample leaves the column and is detected with a uniform response. This assumption is not true for samples containing non-volatile additives and applying this test method under these conditions will yield higher-than-expected results. Therefore, the results obtained with this test method are reported as the area percent of oil.
