ASTM D6537 Test

ASTM D6537 Standard Practice for Instrument Pack Shock Testing to Determine Package Performance

The purpose of ASTM D6537 is to measure shock responses when a true or simulated packet is subjected to impact. This test will measure packet performance using acceleration measurement techniques. The results of this test will provide the user with useful information about package performance. They can determine the ability of the package to withstand the shocks and impact hazards that it may encounter during distribution.

ASTM D6537 Test

The apparatus required for ASTM D6537 is shock or impact apparatus, instrumentation system, accelerometer and wiring. All apparatuses must meet the requirements specified in the standard. The number of samples required for the test depends on the purpose of the tests. There are two options:

Option 1- Real Contents and Package

This test method is used to evaluate the protective capacity of the packaging intended for dispatch. Prototypes can provide a different result, so when a prototype needs to be used, it should be as close as possible to the actual packaging and product produced.

Option 2- Simulated contents and package

This test option can be used for costly, limited availability or inherently dangerous products. A simulated product can be used, but it should have the same characteristics as the real product.

It is important to maintain structural integrity before testing. The packaging should not be damaged when it comes to the test laboratory.

Before testing, the accuracy of the test equipment must be verified by calibration. The package must be conditioned before testing, if applicable.

To start the test, the accelerometer must be mounted at a point that represents the package as a whole. The accelerometer should be mounted so that it is not loose or loses contact with the package. The recommended mounting method is a threaded connection.

However, other methods such as adhesives, cements, magnetic bonds and waxes can also be used. The packaging must be closed and sealed, as for shipping. Then a shock test should be done.

At the end of the test, the lab will write a report that summarizes the test results. The report will follow ASTM D6537 guidelines.
