The ASTM D149 standard includes dielectric testing of solid electrical insulating materials at commercial power frequencies. ASTM D149 tests dielectric strength between 60 and 25 Hz, typically at 800 Hz unless otherwise specified. This test determines the breakdown voltage across the thickness of the test material.
Insulators must be able to withstand the voltage levels they will encounter during service to prevent property damage and human injury. The dielectric strength test measures the durability of insulating materials for electronic devices.
A product must pass dielectric testing to meet electrical safety testing standards.
Such tests measure the point of failure in a material: when dielectric breakdown or electrical discharge occurs in the material. Since the thickness of the material greatly affects its strength, dielectric strength is measured as voltage per unit thickness.
Temperature also affects dielectric strength. Higher temperatures generally weaken an insulator's resistance to dielectric breakdown. In addition, mechanical stresses can lower the dielectric strength; Mechanical loading of insulating materials can introduce internal defects that act as leakage pathways for electrical discharge.
