This test method uses a Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer to monitor the deposition of oxidation products in in-use petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants as a result of normal machine operation. Petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants react with oxygen in the air to form a number of different chemical species, including aldehydes, ketones, esters, and carboxylic acids. This test method is designed as a fast, simple spectroscopic control for monitoring oxidation in in-service petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants to help diagnose machine operating condition based on measuring the level of oxidation in the oil.

Obtaining FT-IR spectral data to measure oxidation in in-use oil and lubricant samples is described in Application D7418. In this test method, measurement and data interpretation parameters for oxidation are presented using both direct trend analysis and differential (spectral subtraction) trend analysis.

This test method is based on the trend of spectral changes associated with oxidation of petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants in use. Warnings or alarm limits can be set on the basis of a fixed minimum value for a single measurement, or alternatively, based on the rate of change of the measured response.

It is not the intent of this test method to establish or recommend normal, stimulus, alert, or alert limits for any machine. These limits should be established with advice and guidance from the machine manufacturer and maintenance group.

This test method is for petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants and does not apply to ester-based oils, including polyol esters or phosphate esters.
