This standard specifies the compressive strength and stiffness properties of polymer matrix composite materials using a combined loading compression test fixture.
This test method is applicable to general composites that are balanced and symmetrical. The sample can be tabless (Procedure A) or striped (Procedure B) as required. A requirement for successful testing is that the specimen tips are not crushed during testing.
Stripless samples are generally suitable for use with materials with low orthotropy, eg fabrics, chopped fiber composites, and laminates with a maximum of 50% 0° ply or equivalent. Materials with higher orthotropy, including unidirectional composites, typically require tabs.
The compressive force is imparted to the sample by the combined tip and shear loading. In contrast, Test Method D3410/D3410M is a pure shear-loaded compression test method and Test Method D695 is a pure end-loaded test method.
Besides unidirectional (0° ply orientation) composites, versatile composite laminates, fabric composites, chopped fiber composites and similar materials can be tested.
Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. Inch-pound units are shown in brackets in the test. The values specified in each system are not exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
