It can also be used in adhesive bond tests. This test method is designed for the use of composites consisting of unidirectional carbon fiber tape laminates with brittle and rigid single-phase polymer matrices.
A key feature of this test method and associated fixture is its ability to perform tests at desired Mode I to Mode II ratios. Most of the other test methods currently available only allow certain coefficients to be applied or the relationship is not well defined.
The test specimen is typically 4,5" to 7" long, 0,8" to 1,0" wide, and 0,12" to 0,20" thick. It includes a 1,5" to 3,0" long non-adhesive attachment in the midplane at one end. Hinges are glued or bolted to the top and bottom of the specimen at this end.
One of the two hinges is then fixed to the right end of the base and the other to the right end of the loading arm. A force will be applied through a yoke at the left end of the loading arm. The load point displacement against the applied force and the corresponding length of the propagating crack are recorded.
