ASTM D6905 Test Standard for Impact Flexibility of Organic Coatings

This standard specifies a procedure for determining the ability of a coating film and substrate to resist splintering, cracking or chipping when the film and substrate swell.

ASTM D6905 Test Standard for Impact Flexibility of Organic Coatings

This standard does not measure impact resistance, but uses quick action to develop Test Methods D522, a test method for flexibility. All problems with time variables are eliminated in mandrel tests, as the effect of the coating is almost instantaneous.

ASTM D6905 Test Method

The tested organic coating is applied to suitable thin metal panels. After the coating has cured, a standard weight/notch is dropped from a measured distance so that it strikes the substrate, which deforms the coating and substrate. Percent elongation is the area of highest stretch where there is no film break that the film can withstand.

Coatings adhered to substrates are subject to damaging impacts during the manufacture of the articles and their use in service. This impact resistance test method has been found to be useful in predicting the performance of organic coatings in terms of their ability to resist impact cracking.
