EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D2265 standard. The ASTM D2265 standard covers the determination of the dropping point of lubricating grease. The dropping point measured by this test is an artificially corrected number that has no effect on the high temperature performance of the grease.
The dropping point is useful to help identify grease by type and to establish and maintain benchmarks for quality control. Because the dropping point is a static test, the results should be considered of only limited significance to the service performance of conventional soap thickeners. Above 200 °C, the dropping point is unrelated to the grease's maximum upper operating temperature.
Joint tests in the past on conventional soap-thickened greases have generally shown that the drop points of Test Method D2265 and Test Method D566 are compatible up to 200°C. It is of no known significance where the results differ. However, agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser on the test method used is recommended.
Mercury thermometers are used in this test method. Mercury has been identified by many regulatory agencies as a hazardous substance that can cause central nervous system, kidney and liver damage. Mercury or its vapors can be harmful to health and corrosive to materials. Care should be taken when working with mercury and products containing mercury.
