The method can be applied to any type of wood-based structural panel. The grain direction or orientation of the individual plies, laminations or layers should be parallel or perpendicular to the edge of the test specimen.

If the plies, laminations or layers have different material or elastic properties, the method gives the effective shear modulus. Wood-based structural panels used include plywood, oriented particleboard and veneer, and composites made of wood-based layers.

This test method is mainly designed for material where the grain or orientation of individual plies, laminations or layers is parallel or perpendicular to the edge of the sample. However, if using a four-ply panel with all plies the same thickness, it can be used for plywood samples where the grain is at 45° to the sample edges. The control condition is that the EI (modulus of elasticity × moment of inertia) values ​​along both diagonals are equal.
