The coal tar pitch will be prepared from selected crude oils using appropriate refining processes, and will be homogeneous and anhydrous. Materials should be sampled, tested, and conformed to properties such as water content, specific gravity, ring and ball softening point, Cleveland open cup flash point, solubility in carbon disulfide, ash content, and distillation (total distillates and residue).
Coal tar pitch is a byproduct of converting coal to coal or coal gas. It is a sticky, dark brown or black liquid that is resistant to flow and has a very strong odour. The actual components that make up the coal tar pitch vary because the chemicals in the coal are different.
Despite this, coal tar pitch is mainly composed of a wide variety of different phenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. While coal tar has medicinal uses in the treatment of some skin conditions, it is primarily burned as a low-cost fuel or processed into other materials.
The ASTM D450 test cancels and supersedes the ASTM D145 test, constituting a technical revision.
Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
