This standard covers laboratory measurements of the strength of thermal insulation materials formed between thermoplastic surfaces of flexible webs immediately after an insulation is made and before it cools to ambient temperature.
These test methods are limited to instrumented hot seal testing, which requires a testing machine that automatically heat seals a sample and immediately determines the strength of the hot seal at a precisely measured time after completion of the seal cycle.
An additional prerequisite is that the operator has no influence on the test once the sealing sequence has started. These test methods do not include toolless manual procedures using springs, levers, pulleys and weights where test results may be affected by operator technique.
Two variations of the instrumented hot snap test are described in these test methods and differ mainly in two respects: (a) the rate of coupling disengagement during testing of the sealed specimen, and (b) whether the test machine generates the specimen's cooling curve. tests the material or instead makes a measurement of the maximum force observed after a certain delay time. Both test methods can be used to test all materials covered by these test methods and within the range and capacity of the machine used.
