ASTM D696 Standard Test Method for Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion of Plastics at -30°C to 30°C by Vitreous Silica Dilatometer

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D696 testing. This test method involves determining the linear coefficient of thermal expansion for plastic materials with coefficients of expansion greater than 1 μm ⁄(m.°C) using a vitreous silica dilatometer.

At test temperatures and under applied stresses, plastic materials should have a negligible rate of creep or elastic strain, or both, as these properties will significantly affect the accuracy of the measurements.

This test method should not be used for measurements on materials with a very low coefficient of expansion (less than 1 μm/(m.°C). For materials with a very low coefficient of expansion, interferometry or capacitance techniques are recommended.

An alternative technique commonly used to measure this property is thermomechanical analysis, as described in Test Method E831, which allows this property to be measured over a scanned temperature range.

The thermal expansion of a plastic consists of a reversible component in which length changes are superimposed due to changes in moisture content, curing, loss of plasticizer or solvents, release of stresses, phase changes, and other factors.

This test method is intended to determine the linear thermal expansion coefficient under the exclusion of these factors as far as possible. In general, it will not be possible to completely exclude the influence of these factors. Therefore, the test method can only be expected to give an approximation of the actual thermal expansion.
