ASTM D3552 Test for Tensile Properties of Fiber Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites

This standard covers the determination of the tensile properties of metal matrix composites reinforced with continuous and discontinuous high modulus fibers.

This test method applies to uniaxially loaded specimens tested in laboratory air at room temperature or elevated temperatures.

Types of metal matrix composites covered include:

• Unidirectional— Any fiber-reinforced composite in which all fibers are aligned in one direction. Continuous or discontinuous reinforcing fibers, longitudinal and transverse properties.
• 0°/90° Balanced Cross Ply— A laminate with 0 and 90° ply only. This is not necessarily symmetrical, continuous or discontinuous reinforcing fibers.
• Angled Laminate—Any stable laminate composed of multiples of ± theta where theta is an acute angle with respect to a reference direction. Continuous reinforcement fibers without 0° reinforcement fibers (i.e. (±45)ns, (±30)ns etc.).
• Semi-Isotropic Laminate—A stable and symmetrical laminate in which, at a given point, a structural feature of interest exhibits isotropic behavior in the plane of the laminate. Continuous reinforcing fibers with 0° reinforcing fibers (ie (0/±45/90)s, (0/±30)s, etc.).
• Undirected and Random Discontinuous Fibers.
• Directionally Solidified Eutectic Composites.

The technical content of this standard has been stable since 1996 without significant objection from its stakeholders. Since there is limited technical support for the maintenance of this standard, changes made since then are limited to items necessary to maintain consistency with other ASTM D30 Committee standards. For this reason, the standard should not be considered to contain any significant changes in approach and practice since 1996. Future maintenance of the standard will only be in response to specific requests and only to the extent permitted by technical support.
