This standard evaluates the flexural bond strength normal to bearing joints of masonry structures constructed from manufactured masonry units.
The first method is “Test Method for Laboratory Prepared Samples”. Its purpose is to compare the bond strengths of masonry mortars (under specified conditions). For example, it can be used to check the quality of mortar products after production or to indicate the bond strength of a mortar product (under given conditions) without requiring the product to be tested with many different units. It is not intended to represent field conditions. It uses standard concrete masonry units. Mortars are grouped according to their equivalent weights to volume ratios and mixed into a prescribed flow. Prisms are constructed using a gauge and bag cured.
The second method is “Test Method for Field Prepared Samples”. Its purpose is to evaluate the bond strength of a given unit-mortar combination (under given conditions) for the purposes of pre-construction evaluation of materials or quality control during construction. Mortars are traditionally blended and flow is not foreseen. Prisms are traditionally built (no jigs) and bag cured.
The third method is “Test Method of Prisms Removed from Existing Wall”. Its purpose is to evaluate the bond strength of unit-mortar combinations of prisms cut from existing walls.
