When used to determine the residual strength of plates affected by drop weight, this test method is commonly referred to as the Post-Impact Compression or CAI method.
The standard uses a flat, rectangular composite plate that has been subjected to a previous damaging event, tested under pressure loading using a stabilization fixture.
The resulting damage tolerance properties are specific to the type, geometry, and location of damage to the plate.
The properties created by this test method are highly dependent on a variety of factors including specimen geometry, placement, type of damage, extent of damage, location of damage, and boundary conditions. Therefore, results are often not scalable to other configurations and are specific to the combination of geometric and physical conditions being tested.
This test method can be used to test undamaged polymer matrix composite plates, but historically such tests have shown a relatively high rate of undesirable failure modes.
