ASTM D737 Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

The ASTM D737 standard covers the measurement of air permeability of textile fabrics. This test method applies to most fabrics, including woven fabrics, non-woven fabrics, air cushion fabrics, blankets, pile fabrics, knit fabrics, layered fabrics, and pile fabrics.

The fabrics may be untreated, substantially sized, coated, resin-treated or otherwise treated.

The air flow rate passing vertically through a known fabric area is adjusted to obtain a predetermined air pressure difference between the two fabric surfaces. From this air flow rate, the air permeability of the fabric is determined.

ASTM D737 Test Procedure

Unless otherwise specified in the contract order, samples should be set to standard atmosphere with 21 +/- 1°C (70 +/- 2°F) and 65 +/- 2% RH. Handle samples carefully and prevent them from changing their natural state. Place each sample on the test head of the air permeability tester and check the test as the user manual. Performing tests at conditioned water pressure in accordance with the user manual. If no instruction manual is available, use a water pressure of 125 Pa (12,7 mm or 0,5 inches of water). The number of tests is at least four to ensure high accuracy.
