ASTM D7386 Standard for Performance Testing of Packages for Single Parcel Distribution Systems

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D7386 standard. The ASTM D7386 standard provides a uniform basis for assessing the capability of shipping units up to but not exceeding 150 lb (68 kg) for a single case distribution system that will withstand the hazards associated with the distribution environment. This is accomplished by subjecting it to a test plan consisting of a set of expected hazards encountered in distribution cycles.

This practice is not intended to replace material specifications or existing pre-shipment testing procedures. The suitability of this application for use with hazardous substances has not been determined.

For performance testing, the unit should not be turned on until the test is complete. However, if testing is for design development purposes, it may be helpful to open the container from several points to assess the condition of its contents.

The test sample should be prepared in accordance with the standards specified by ASTM D7386. Test samples are representative samples of complete shipping units. Equally important, it is recommended that the samples contain actual ingredients used in the field.

If the test sample is sent to the testing laboratory instead of being assembled on-site, there can be no damage before starting the test.

ASTM D7386 integrity test objectives will determine how many replicates are required. However, it is recommended to repeat the test. This will ultimately provide more accurate results. Before testing, the test sample is inspected and labeled.

Labeling is determined by the type of container: small containers, sacks, bags, rectangular containers and cylindrical containers bagged for transport by the carrier. The test specimen should be conditioned or preconditioned prior to testing if necessary.

ASTM D7386 compliance criteria can range from pass-fail judgment to quantitative scoring or analysis. The form and content of acceptance criteria can vary greatly depending on the circumstances. A common example of acceptance criteria is:

  • Criterion 1- the product is undamaged
  • Criterion 2 - package intact
  • Criterion 3- both criteria 1 and 2

Values stated in inch-pound units should be considered standard. Values in parentheses are mathematical conversions to non-standard SI units, provided for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
