ASTM D7386 Test

ASTM D7386 Standard Practice for Performance Testing Packages for Single Parcel Distribution Systems

The ASTM D7386 test is designed for transport units equal to or less than 150 lbs. The test will evaluate the unit's ability to withstand the dangers it will encounter in a single-parcel delivery system distribution environment. The test will be carried out in the order of hazards envisaged throughout the distribution.

ASTM D7386 Test

The test methods used to simulate the transport medium represent conditions in the actual distribution. The test must be carried out on the container throughout the ordered test sequence. For performance testing, the unit should not be opened until the test is completed. However, if the tests were made for design development purposes, it may be useful to open the container at various points to assess the condition of its content.

The test sample must be prepared in accordance with the standards specified by ASTM D7386. The test sample consists of representative samples of complete transport units. It should contain the actual content used in the sample area. If the test sample is sent to the test lab instead of being mounted on site, make sure that there is no damage before starting the test.

The test targets will determine how many repetitions are required. However, it is recommended to repeat the test to obtain more accurate results. The test sample will be examined and labeled before testing. The labeling is determined by the type of container: the carrier, sacks, bags, rectangular containers, and small containers packaged for transport by cylindrical containers. Labeling instructions can be found in the ASTM D7386 test procedure. The test sample must be conditioned or preconditioned before testing, if necessary.

The organization performing the test will determine the acceptance criteria before the test. When choosing criteria, they must take into account the required condition of the package upon arrival at the shipping destination. Criteria can range from successful-unsuccessful decision to quantitative scoring or analysis. The form and content of the admission criteria may vary greatly depending on the circumstances.

A common example of admission criteria:

  • Criterion 1- Product is harmless
  • Criterion 2- Package intact
  • Criterion 3- Both criteria 1 and 2

The test procedure is fully summarized by the ASTM D7386 standard. The procedure follows this sequence:

  • Identify and define packet test samples in terms of size, weight, and construction.
  • Setting acceptance criteria - Develop acceptance criteria keeping in mind the end of distribution
  • Writing a test plan - use the order of the table below to write a test plan
  • Select samples for testing
  • Case examples
  • Perform tests (see ASTM D7386 standard)
  • Evaluate the results - determine whether the container meets the acceptance criteria
  • Document test results - report every step of the test
  • Track shipments - if possible, track shipments to ensure accuracy of laboratory test results compared to the actual delivery system.
