ASTM D7771 Standard Test Method for Determining the Content of Benzo-α-Pyrene (BaP) in Carbon Black

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D7771 standard. The ASTM D7771 standard covers the qualitative and quantitative determination of only one specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), benzo-α-pyrene (BaP), on carbon black. The procedure includes Soxhlet extraction with toluene and analysis by mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography.

ASTM D7771 Standard Test Method for Determining the Content of Benzo-α-Pyrene (BaP) in Carbon Black

This method is not intended to test for US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) compliance of carbon blacks used for indirect food contact applications. This test procedure is used to determine the concentration of BaP extracted from carbon black by means of a Soxhlet extraction apparatus with toluene.

BaP, also known as n—3,4-benzopyrene or benzo-a-pyrene, is a specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) or polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon composed of fused aromatic rings with no heteroatoms or substitutions.

PAHs are naturally found in oil, coal and tar deposits; produced by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons; and occurs in many other products and processes. BaP is a pentacyclic PAH of the formula C20H12, related to pyrene by the fusion of a phenylene group at the alpha position.

A portion of carbon black is extracted with Soxhlet with toluene for 16 hours. The extract is concentrated and then analyzed for BaP by mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography. BaP quantification is carried out by means of an internal standard.

Values stated in SI units will be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization, EUROLAB, provides standard test method services for the determination of Benzo-α-Pyrene (BaP) content in carbon black, within the framework of national and international standards, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies. Provides testing services within the scope of ASTM D7771 standard.
