ASTM E2412 Standard Practice for Condition Monitoring of In-Service Oils by Trend Analysis Using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometry

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM E2412 standard. This application covers the use of FT-IR in monitoring additive depletion, contaminant build-up and basic stock deterioration in lubricants, hydraulic fluids and other fluids used in normal machine operation.

Contaminants tracked include water, soot, ethylene glycol, fuels and the wrong oil. Oxidation, nitration and sulfonation of base stocks are monitored for evidence of degradation. The purpose of this monitoring activity is to diagnose the operating condition of the machine based on the fault conditions observed in the oil.

Measurement and data interpretation parameters are provided to enable operators of different FT-IR spectrometers to compare results using the same techniques.

This application is based on trend and dispersion response analysis from mid-infrared absorption measurements. While calibration is possible to establish physical units of concentration, it is unnecessary or impractical in most cases.

Warning or alarm limits (the point at which maintenance action is recommended or required on a monitored machine) may be determined by statistical analysis, history of identical or similar equipment, cyclical testing, or other methods linked to equipment performance.

These warning or alarm limits may be a fixed maximum or minimum value for comparison with a single measurement, or may also be based on the rate of change of the measured response. This application describes distributions, but does not prevent the use of rate-of-change alerts and alarms.

The spectra and distribution profiles presented here are for illustrative purposes only and should not be construed as representing or constituting lubricant or machine guides.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
