ASTM D7792 Standard Practice for Freeze-Thaw Conditioning of Pultrusion Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites Used in Structural Designs

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D7792 standard. The ASTM D7792 standard defines freeze/thaw conditioning procedures for pultruded FRP composites intended for use in structural design applications.

ASTM D7792 Standard Practice for Freeze-Thaw Conditioning of Pultrusion Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites Used in Structural Designs

In general, it is possible for the mechanical properties of FRP composites to be affected by environmental conditions such as the freeze/thaw cycle. In order to make reliable comparisons between different materials under freeze/thaw ambient conditions, the freeze/thaw conditions to which samples of these materials are subjected before and during testing need to be standardized.

The freeze/thaw conditioning procedures outlined in this application are designed to provide a standard procedure for evaluating and comparing the effect of 100 freeze/thaw cycles under controlled laboratory conditions on pultruded FRP composites to be used in structural design applications. The conditioning procedures outlined in this application are designed to produce repeatable results for comparing and evaluating these materials, but are not intended to produce equilibrium conditions or actual service conditions for these materials.

Sampling shall be appropriate for locations where test samples are to be taken from reinforced pultruded composites as in Application D7745.

The numbers and types of test specimens for the specific mechanical properties to be determined will be in accordance with ASTM test methods. If Application D7290 is to be used to determine characteristic values, at least ten samples for control and ten samples for freeze/thaw exposure are required for a total of at least 20 samples.

The thickness of the test specimens will be the thickness of the original product without any surface treatment. The sample thickness must be compatible with the thickness requirements of the mechanical property test method that will be used to evaluate the samples.

Use test specimens up to 25 mm (1.0 in.) thick with this freeze/thaw standard practice. Experimental data have shown that for pultruded composite specimens up to 25 mm (1.0 in.), the inner core of the test specimen freezes and thaws as desired during the cycle time and temperatures described in this application. If the core is not freezing and thawing during this cycle for the sample, property data from samples subjected to conditioning as described in this freeze/thaw application will not be reported as obtained using this freeze/thaw standard application.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
