This standard covers the determination of sulfated ash from unused lubricating oils containing additives and from additive concentrates used in the composition.
These additives usually contain one or more of the following metals: barium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, sodium and tin. Sulfur, phosphorus and chlorine elements can also be found in combination.
Application of this test method to sulfated ash levels below 0.02% by mass is limited to oils containing ashless additives. The lower limit of the test method is 0,005% by mass of sulfated ash.
This test method is not designed for the analysis of used engine oils or oils containing lead. It is also not recommended for analysis of additive-free lubricating oils where Test Method D482 can be used.
There is evidence that magnesium does not react in the same way with other alkali metals in this test. If magnesium additives are present, the data should be interpreted with caution.
There is evidence that samples containing molybdenum may produce poor results because molybdenum compounds are not fully recovered at the ashing temperature.
Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
