The ASTM D882 standard covers the determination of the tensile properties of plastics in the form of thin sheets and films (less than 1.0 mm (0.04 inch) thick). Film is defined as an optional term for coating with a nominal thickness of not more than 0,25 mm (0,010 inch).
The tensile properties of plastics 1.0 mm (0.04 in) thick or more shall be determined according to Test Method D638. This test method can be used to test all plastics in the thickness range described and the capacity of the machine used.
Specimen extension can be measured by grip separation, extension indicators or displacement of gauge marks. The procedure for determining the tensile modulus of elasticity is included in a strain ratio. The modulus determination is generally based on the use of the coupling separation as a measure of elongation; however, the use of extensometers is desirable and provision for the use of such instrumentation is included in the procedure.
The test data obtained with this test method are relevant and suitable for use in engineering design. This test method is similar to ISO 527-3 but is not considered technically equivalent. ISO 527-3 allows for additional sample configurations, specifies different test speeds, and requires an extensometer or gauge markings on the sample.
