ASTM D885 Tire Cord Tensile Test

These test methods cover the testing of industrial filament yarns made from wholly produced organic-based fibres, cords spun from such yarns, fabrics woven from these cords, and products made specifically for use in the manufacture of pneumatic tyres.

They can be applied to similar yarns and cords used for reinforcing other rubber products and for other industrial applications. The test methods apply to nylon, polyester and rayon yarns and tire cords spun from such yarns and fabrics made from these cords.

Thread or cord can be wound on cones, tubes, bobbins, reels or beams; can be woven into fabric; or in any other form. Methods include only the test procedure and no specifications or tolerances.

No procedures for determining the fatigue resistance of the cord are included, but several commonly used procedures for the measurement of the fatigue resistance of cords in rubber are published in the appendix to these test methods in the 1967 Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Chapter 24. and earlier issues of Test Methods D885.

The sections “Growth of Conditioned Threads and Cords”, “High Temperature Properties of Threads and Cords” and “Properties of Wet Threads and Cords” have been moved to Annex X1 - Annex X3 as non-mandatory information items.
