This test method covers the determination of the individual hydrocarbon components of spark ignition motor fuels with boiling ranges up to 225°C and their mixtures containing oxygenated mixtures (MTBE, ETBE, ethanol and the like).
Other light liquid hydrocarbon mixtures typically encountered in oil refining operations such as mixing stocks (naphthas, reformates, alkylates and the like) can also be analyzed; however, statistical data were obtained only with blended spark ignition engine fuels.
Based on the results of the collaborative study, individual ingredient concentrations and precision are determined in the range of 0,01% to about 30% by mass. The test method is applicable to higher and lower concentrations for each component; however, if the test method is used for ingredients with concentrations outside of the specified ranges, the user should verify accuracy.
This test method also determines the concentration range of methanol, ethanol, t-butanol, methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl t-butyl ether (ETBE), and t-amyl methyl ether (TAME) in spark ignition engine fuels. However, the co-study data provided insufficient statistical data to derive an expression of certainty for these compounds.
