ASTM D974 Test for Acid and Base Count with Color Indicator Titration

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D974 testing. This standard covers the determination of 2 acidic or basic components in petroleum products and soluble or nearly soluble lubricants in mixtures of toluene and isopropyl alcohol.

ASTM D974 Test for Acid and Base Count with Color Indicator Titration

Applies to the determination of acids or bases with water dissociation constants greater than 10-9; Extremely weak acids or bases with dissociation constants less than 10-9 do not mix. Salts react if their hydrolysis constant is greater than 10-9.

In new and used oils, components considered to have acidic properties include organic and inorganic acids, esters, phenolic compounds, lactones, resins, heavy metal salts, and additives such as inhibitors and detergents. Similarly, components considered to have essential properties include organic and inorganic bases, amino compounds, salts of weak acids (soaps), basic salts of polyacid bases, salts of heavy metals, and additives such as inhibitors and detergents.

This test method is not suitable for measuring the essential components of many essential additive types of lubricating oils. Test Method D4739 can be used for this purpose.

This test method can be used to indicate the relative changes that occur in an oil during use under oxidizing conditions. Although the titration is done under certain equilibrium conditions, the method does not measure an absolute acidic or basic property that can be used to predict the performance of an oil under service conditions. A general relationship between bearing corrosion and acid or base numbers is not known.

Oils that could not be analyzed for acid number with this test method due to the uncertainty of the color indicator end point, such as many cutting oils, anti-rust oils and similar compound oils or extremely dark oils, were analyzed with Test Method D664. The acid numbers obtained with this color indicator test method need not be numerically the same as those obtained with Test Method D664, the base numbers obtained with this color indicator test method need not be numerically the same as those obtained with Test Method D4739, but they are generally of the same magnitude.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
