When the Brinell hardness test was developed, force levels were specified in kilogram-force (kgf) units. Although this standard specifies the Newton (N) unit of force in the International System of Units (SI), due to the historical precedent and continued widespread use of kgf units, force values in kgf units are provided for informational purposes and most of the explanations in this standard express forces in kgf units.
