ASTM E1004 Test Standard for Determining Electrical Conductivity Using the Electromagnetic Eddy-Current Method

The ASTM E1004 standard covers a procedure for determining the electrical conductivity of non-magnetic metals using the electromagnetic (eddy current) method. The procedure was written primarily for use with commercially available direct-read electrical conductivity instruments.

General purpose eddy current devices may also be used for electrical conductivity measurements, but will not be covered in this test method. This test method is applicable to metals with a flat or slightly curved surface and includes metals with or without a thin non-conductive coating.

Eddy current determinations of electrical conductivity can be used to classify metals according to variables such as alloy type, aging, cold deformation, heat treatment, effects associated with inhomogeneous heating or overheating, and corrosion effects. The usefulness of studying these properties depends on the amount of electrical conductivity change caused by a change in the specific variable.

Electrical conductivity, when evaluated with eddy current devices, is usually expressed as a percentage of the conductivity of the International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS). Annealed Copper Standard conductivity is defined as 0.58 x 10 8 20 a S/m (100% IACS) °C.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
